There are countless options available for towing products and towing accessories.

Ever since man first domesticated an animal to ride he has needed available towing products and towing accessories. Back in those days, however, things seemed a little more straight forward. You simply needed a wagon (your towing product) and a way to attach the horse and wagon together (your towing accessories).

Today the process is a little more involved but the principal is the same. A vehicle is driven with another set of wheels attached to it. That set of wheels might be a trailer or another vehicle but unlike the days of a horse and wagon you now need lights and the ability to move at a greater speed without losing your load.

Lighting is one of the first things you need to look into before towing. Some people try to avoid this by only driving during the day but that is not a realistic solution. Why? Even in the day time the brake lights for either the vehicle or trailer being towed need to work. Not only is it the law but it helps avoid rear-end collisions. The same is true of the turn signals because people want to know what you are planning to do. This can all be fixed with a lighting hitch. They allow you to quickly connect and disconnect the lights so that they respond as they should.

If additional lighting is still wanted there are a number of lighting systems that can be used. Most attach magnetically and can be controlled from inside the lead vehicle. They could be anything from lighting bars to flashing lights.

Once the lighting issue is resolved comes attaching the two vehicles together. This requires a tow hitch and brings up a new issue. What will be towed and what will it require. If it is the same thing to be towed over and over again then a matching hitch is all that is needed. If a few different things might be towed then universal receiver in needed.

A universal receiver can be quickly changed so that any hitch needed is available without bolting more equipment to the vehicle. Because of this, it is the best option for anybody that plans on doing any towing because it gives so many options in under a minute.

The next thing that need to be considered is what is being towed. If it is a car you will still have three options. It can ride in trailer. The types of trailers made for this are built to both handle the weight and to protect the vehicle being towed. They also cause no wear on the car in transit.

If the trailer is more than the budget allows then there is the car dolly. Like a dolly, it lifts the front end of the car an rolls it on its back wheels. While not as safe as the trailer, it causes less wear than the final option.

There is a final option called flat towing. It leaves the car with more wear and is generally considered to be a final option. Because of this, it is mostly used for RV’s.

This is just an introduction to available towing products and towing accessories. There are countless options made by equally countless companies. Each has its own uses and some do things that others can’t. Once what is needed is understood, the process of shopping can begin.
