About Us

In 2002 we introduced one of the initial smart cars to the US. Our objective during that time was to determine if a market existed or could be developed for these types of terrific, tiny microcars. After keeping it here for approximately one year and getting behind the wheel and motoring all across the country, we were required by law to send it back to Germany. During this twelve month odyssey, we discovered quite a few interesting items.

At that time, the smart was known as the smart city coupe and from the first day, it was indeed a winner wherever we drove it. Every so often, the smart literally caused traffic to come to a complete halt. More than once, we required the assistance of the police to get traffic to begin moving again. In each case, there were hordes of drivers and onlookers that wanted to find out what we were driving and what a smart car was.

At this point, it was great having a smart car available for us to drive the US. The smart was only a fantasy at this time and the smart car didn’t exist as commercially available vehicles, so sales were also nonexistent. Zap had not gotten associated with “gray market” smart cars, and at that time, the original marketing entity headed by Penske Motor Cars wasn’t even under consideration as a possible sales and marketing mechanism for selling the smart line. It was simply premature to view it as an “officially” available entry to the US market.

Among the most fascinating highlights was the remarkable response the smart received from the motor home and RV aficionados that saw it. Even the RV retailers we came upon were both concerned and intrigued with the smart car and wanted to know about pricing and possible RV insurance implications and costs.

It seemed that everyone wanted to know when and if they could actually buy one to tow behind their RV’s. Even then, we were definitely sure the smart, which had a weight of less than 1,800 lbs. was the perfect vehicle to tow behind a motorhome or RV. Consequently, in 2005 we created and developed smartfortow.com. Smartfortow.com was and is committed to delivering all the news, information and facts anyone would need to know to be able to safely tow their smart fortwo.
